Pinned It and Did It: Paperbag Skirt

I have to say this has been my most difficult, but rewarding Pinned It and Did It DIY project to date.  I am not much of a sewer, but have slowly started teaching myself.  I used a variation of THIS tutorial found on Pinterest as well a few of my own tweaks along the way.

I have been seeing super adorable chevron and polka dot skirts all over the place, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and make me one.  Of course, there wasn't a chevron pattern that I wanted, so I went with the polka dots instead.

I highly recommend this tutorial for beginner sewers like myself.  There is an actual diagram for how to measure your fabric and where to sew, which helps a very visual person like me make this tutorial very easy to follow.

Items needed to create this skirt:
  • Fabric of your choice (I ended up using about a yard)
  • Elastic
  • Thread in the color of your skirt
Tips/suggestions:
  • Pre-wash your fabric to avoid shrinking after washing
  • Pick a fabric that isn't see through unless you are doing a lining.
Since completing this skirt, now I have the sewing bug!  The next project I would like to tackle is a pencil skirt.

Have you ever made your own skirt?

  1. I used to see more when I was younger and enjoyed it, but I was never really good at it. In fact, when I was pregnant with my oldest son (who is not 290, I made some of my own maternity clothes, because the choices back then were not cute!
After years of not sewing, I barely remember anything; its not like riding a bike.....you get on after years of not riding and you can still do it. Nope, I'm bad at it now.
Your skirt is ADORABLE...love the polka dots. Have fun with your new sewing endeavors. Maybe I'll re-learn too (after this competition!).

    1. I was going to mention Hobby Lobby too. I just bought some grey/white chevron fabric there yesterday. They had black/white and a couple of other color combos too.

  4. Wow, Heather! It look awesome. You did a great job. I made a lot of my own clothes in high school and I actually have a nice sewing machine and a box full of fabric and patterns, but haven't touched them in several years. :) I think if i ever get to the point where I can take them out of storage and keep them out I will get back into it. :)

  9. Adorable! Congrats on learning to sew!

I've dabbled in sewing. I capable, I just don't care much for it. Chevron would be a little trickier as you'd want to match the prints at the seams.
